A Stór Mo Chroí

Hello Friends!

I had been thinking a lot about this song recently here in New York and considered doing a video of it. Then I was reminded of it again while I was watching an episode of “Hell on Wheels” when one of the characters sings it in a slightly different tune then the one I had learned. I originally was taught this song and first heard it from Eileen Ni Shuillibhean, a professor of mine at the University College Cork. It is a song of sorrow and parting likely performed at “American Wakes” before family members emigrated to American and other foreign countries to find their fortune. As far as I can tell it has largely remained in Ireland in the centuries since its now unknown authorship and has entered very little into popular Irish American music (I’ve only found two recordings of it so far). I hope you enjoy it and do feel free to share it if you love it!

Blessings!
